Testing well water when buying a home
Lenders and buyers often require a well water test before closing, especially for FHA and VA loans. Order it early: bacteria results take a few days, and a positive result means treatment and a retest before closing.
How to do it
- Ask your lender which tests are required.
- Have a certified lab or its approved sampler collect the sample so results hold up.
- Test for bacteria and nitrates at minimum, plus local concerns.
- Build time for a retest into your inspection window.
